If there is a bike so beautiful you may just want to hang it on your wall, it is the Bianchi Aquila CV Time Trial bike. But then of course that would be totally wasting it for the purpose it was created: to help you go much faster than you ever have done. As a time trial beast created for national champions against the clock like Wilco Kelderman, you may think the Aquila CV Time Trial bike is way out of reach, but indeed, if you are very keen on improving your time trial times, you can add it to your collection.
Just one look at the Aquila and you will immediately know that this is a machine designed for cutting through the wind. Bianchi has looked at every point of the bike to maximize the aerodynamics, starting with the front end. The handlebar/stem interface has been fully integrated with the head tube and fork to produce the sleekest leading edge possible. They have developed this using computational fluid dynamics simulation software in addition to wind tunnel testing and the feedback received from their sponsored pro riders to make sure the shape is effectively aero, but also comfortable. There is no exposed hardware to disrupt the airflow, and all cabling has been internally routed to keep the look clean and the effect smooth. The frame uses National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) aerodynamic profiles for the tubing, which means that the tubing comes with an airfoil shape to cut through the wind.
The monocoque frame is made with high-modulus carbon fiber combined with Bianchi’s Countervail technology to help cancel painful road vibrations. What the Countervail does is act as a shock absorbing material made from viscoelastic carbon with a structure that works to cancel up to 80% of all road vibrations. The holy grail of bikes has always been to create a frame that is stiff and responsive while remaining comfortable and compliant. Bianchi collaborated with Materials Sciences Corporations to develop Countervail to do what seemed before to be the impossible: have a very stiff, snappy ride without causing bone-shaking fatigue. That is very important particularly for a time trial bike where the position is inherently less comfortable than a normal road bike. Being able to avoid the energy-sapping road roughness could mean the difference between a podium place and an also-ran. The dedicated geometry offers a very aero 76.5° seat tube angle and 72° head tube angle. You may not be able to buy yourself any wind tunnel time, but it won’t take very long for you to realize riding in this position definitely makes you faster, much faster.
The carbon fork has received the same attention to detail in both its aerodynamic shape and the fact that it has a specially designed cover to conceal the front brake to keep the front as smooth and slippery as possible. Similarly, the rear brakes are integrated into the frame for aerodynamics. If you are buying the frameset, the brakes are included since no aftermarket brakes would suit this proprietary design. Also included with the frame will be the bar and stem as well as the seatpost, since they are all essential to the aero system. Another clever innovation the Aquila CV offers is adjustable rear dropouts so that you can customize the distance between your rear wheel and the seat tube to minimize air turbulence.
If you are buying the built-up version, you’ll be glorifying in the union of Bianchi’s bespoke parts with the Shimano Di2 components. For the wheels, the Fulcrum Red Wind XLR Dark 80mm will be included. As go-to wheels within the triathlete community, these Fulcrums will impress you with how responsive and smooth they are in spite of their deep profile. To cover the wheels, you’ll get the Vittoria Rubino Pro Speed 700x25. At 190 grams in 25mm, these are the fastest and lightest member of the Vittoria Rubino family. They offer a fantastically low rolling resistance as well, and with the 25mm give you an extra amount of cushioning road vibrations. If however, you are buying the frameset alone and are planning on building it up yourself, the Aquila CV can be built with Shimano, Campy or SRAM and the dual cable routing will facilitate your task whether you are going for an electronic or mechanical groupset.
The Bianchi Aquila CV Time Trial bike has been designed to increase the rider’s peak power output over long distances by increasing not only the rigidity, but also the comfort level the rider feels on the bike. Add to that all the choice aerodynamic flourishes, and the Aquila will help you reduce your TT times to the point you’ll be wondering how you’d rate in a WorldTour time trial.
