The brakes are SRAM's hydraulic Force disc calipers. The 18mm pistons are designed to optimize power and modulation in cyclocross conditions. They stop 140mm Centerline rotors.
Wheels are clinchers. Specifically, the DT Swiss R23 Spline DB. DB is for Disc Brake, and not only are the straight-pull hubs designed for discs, but so are the rims. The rim shape isn't constrained by braking flats, and thus could be made lighter and stronger. The rims are tubeless-compatible but come covered in Continental's aggressive Cyclo X King 35mm folding tires, an all-condition tread with supple casing
The frameset is a story on its own. BMC utilized their ACE, Accelerated Composites Evolution process to help them work through the myriad of variables by virtually building and testing thousands of framesets before they created the molds. This way, they knew how far to take the materials, the shapes, the geometry to get to the perfect set of characteristics for the frameset.
It looks like a mashup of their SLR01 and Granfondo frames, with the SLR01 dominating. You see tube shapes reminiscent of their top road frame as well as compliance features of the Granfondo-their Tuned Compliance Concept with angle compliance helps at both the dropouts and fork tips to let the wheels move in a vertical plane to keep the bike on the ground and the impacts from pounding your lower back and arms. They designed this for the twisty 'cross courses of Europe, where a high bottom bracket and aggressive angles help when mastering switchbacks, side hills, and elbow-bumping competitors.
Owing to the march of time, this frameset has features that are not only current, but forward-thinking. The post mounts are set up for 140mm rotors. The line from the front brake lever to the front brake caliper has a uniquely clean routing: from the head tube through the fork. The steerer is a tapered 1 1/8" to 1 1/2". The headset, of course, is internal. The derailleur cable runs outside if it's mechanical, inside if electronic: the beauty of Dual Transmission Integration. The bottom bracket standard is BB86, which means you don't need cups for the bearings, both for weight savings and better material manipulation and can run most standard cranks.
This bike is UCI-approved for cyclocross, which has a 33mm max tire width requirement. All the same, the bike can run 35mm cyclocross tires no problem and can fit in some less-aggressive 38mm tires. If you race UCI events, you’ll need to size down; it doesn’t matter for the rest of us.
It's also important to note that this frameset comes with a front derailleur hanger, which is new for 2016. You can now switch to double-ring cranks if you so desire.
The BMC Crossmachine CX01 CX1 Bike is not only maximizing the latest tech, it performs like no other.
